One of the most ambitious scientific projects today could be the return of mammoths to planet Earth. Proponents of this idea hope that these prehistoric creatures will return in the form of hybrids and assume that they will contribute to solving the current environmental problems caused by climate change.
The science project is led by George Church of Harvard University, and it's definitely not a crazy fad, but a real thing. According to the scientist, in six years we could experience the triumphant animal of a giant animal on our planet, from which it evaporated about 10,000 years ago. This idea is supported by the Society for Biological Sciences and Genetics Colossal, represented by entrepreneur Ben Lamm. The company has already set aside a considerable $ 15 million for the project, ie approximately 320 million crowns.
Elephant crossed with a mammoth
Researchers are convinced that they will be able to genetically engineer the Asian elephant in such a way that it will be able to survive in the harsh conditions of the Arctic steppe, where it could restore a degraded environment and combat some of the consequences of climate change.
According to experts, a cross between a mammoth and an elephant could destroy trees, thereby promoting the expansion of grassy areas that keep the soil cool. The aim of the project is not 100% cloning of an extinct animal, which is almost impossible with today's scientific knowledge, but to obtain a certain species with its properties, which is much more feasible.
"We want to create a cold-resistant elephant that will look and behave like a mammoth. Not because we're trying to fool someone. The reason is the fact that we want something that functionally corresponds to a mammoth, ”explained George Church.
The hybrid species would be able to survive in temperatures of minus 40 degrees Celsius and, according to geneticists, will perform all the activities that are common to mammoths.
And how to achieve this? To create an elephant-mammoth hybrid, scientists first need to sequence the hairy mammoth's genome from a preserved specimen obtained from frozen permafrost. Will they then compare it to the genome of Asian elephants to identify those parts of the DNA? which encode mammoth adaptation to cold climates, such as hair, fat layers, and cold-resistant blood. This genetic material would then be added to the elephant's stem cells using CRISPR-Cas9 technology and implemented into eggs, which would be stimulated into the embryo and delivered to the elephant's surrogate mother.
This could have unexpected consequences, the scientist warns
The practical side, as well as the ethics of the return of extinct species, has been discussed in professional circles for decades. At the same time, some experts are not sure whether creating hybrids of elephants and mammoths is the happiest way to restore the Arctic tundra. "The implementation of geoengineering in the Arctic environment of the mammoth is unlikely. The extent to which this experiment would have to be performed is enormous. We are talking about hundreds of thousands of mammoths, whose pregnancies last 22 months and take 30 years to grow, "said evolutionary biologist Victoria Herridge of the Natural History Museum in London.
Well, we'll see if they manage to realize a certain hint, there would be a connection to the time traveler, there was a mention that they managed to de-fa-k-realize it, who would not want to see the mammoth in nature =)
