Zpěvačka se narodila 8. prosince 1966 v Dublinu. Její dětství nebylo příliš idylické – poznamenal je rozvod rodičů, pokřivený vztah s matkou, která ji prý týrala a zneužívala. Následovaly útěky z domova, absence ve škole, krádeže a prostituce, které vyvrcholily polepšovnou. Po návratu ze zařízení, které vedly jeptišky „tvrdé a studené jako led“, pracovala jako servírka v podřadných lokálech a po nocích vystupovala v klubech.
První skladbu nazpívala ve 14 letech, o rok později už měla hotovou polovinu skvělého debutu The Lion And The Cobra (1987). Dokázala oscilovat mezi punkem, hip hopem i irskou tradiční hudbou.
Uznávaná dublinská zpěvačka vydala deset studiových alb a její píseň Nothing Compares 2 U byla v roce 1990 vyhlášena světovým singlem číslo jedna podle Billboard Music Awards.
Obdržela řadu hudebních cen. Na začátku letošního roku získala ocenění na irských hudebních cenách RTÉ Choice Music Awards. Zpěvačka tehdy sklidila velký potlesk, když věnovala svou cenu „všem členům irské uprchlické komunity“.
Na zpěvaččino úmrtí na twitteru reagoval i irský premiér Leo Varadkar: „Její hudbu miloval celý svět a její talent neměl konkurenci a nedal se s ničím srovnávat. Upřímnou soustrast její rodině, jejím přátelům a všem těm, kteří milovali její hudbu.“
V minulosti již několikrát chtěla hudební branži opustit, měla už dost novinářů, spekulovalo se o únavovém syndromu či o studiu teologie. Trpěla bipolární afektivní poruchou, o svých psychických problémech několikrát veřejně hovořila.
V Česku vystoupila čtyřikrát, naposledy v roce 2010 v zahradě zámku Sychrov.

Her childhood was not very idyllic - it was marked by the divorce of her parents, a distorted relationship with her mother, who allegedly tortured and abused her. This was followed by running away from home, absences from school, theft and prostitution, which culminated in a reformatory. After returning from a facility run by nuns "hard and cold as ice," she worked as a waitress in seedy bars and performed in clubs at night.
She sang her first composition at the age of 14, and a year later she had already completed half of her brilliant debut The Lion And The Cobra (1987). She was able to oscillate between punk, hip hop and Irish traditional music.
The acclaimed Dublin singer has released ten studio albums and her song Nothing Compares 2 U was named the world's number one single in 1990 by the Billboard Music Awards.
She has received numerous music awards. Earlier this year, she won an award at the Irish RTÉ Choice Music Awards. The singer then received a standing ovation when she dedicated her award to "all members of the Irish refugee community".
Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar also responded to the singer's death on Twitter: "Her music was loved by the whole world and her talent was unmatched and unmatched. My condolences to her family, her friends and all those who loved her music.”
In the past, she wanted to leave the music industry several times, she had enough journalists, there was speculation about fatigue syndrome or about studying theology. She suffered from bipolar affective disorder, and spoke publicly about her mental problems several times.
She performed four times in the Czech Republic, most recently in 2010 in the garden of Sychrov Castle.
